I’ve written a blog post on this subject before but since just launching HoodgrownTV I thought that I should touch on this topic once again.

As a person who runs a label and is always trying new ways to get his artists out there to be and heard, I can relate to the struggle of those who are in the same boat. Not too long ago, a certain DJ on Twitter made some disparaging remarks about all of the artists hitting him up trying to network. I have a problem with people like this because it wasn’t too long ago that this person was struggling and grinding trying to get his name out there. It seems to me that once certain people begin to make it to a certain level they quickly forget the journey it took to get there.

Yes I understand how that there are a like a billion indie labels and artists and that dealing with them is not only time consuming but can be a pain in the ass sometime, but you have to respect their want and need to be heard and seen. This is why I tell artists all of the time that you must create your own outlets to be seen and heard. When I couldn’t get none of the major magazine sites to support my music, I started my own, Hoodgrown Magazine. When I started hearing the rumblings of artists who couldn’t get featured on VladTV, OnSmash, or WorldStarHipHop, I started my own site, HoodgrownTV. Now not only am I in a position to promote my own work, I can help to promote other artists in need as well. My thing is, you never know who will blow up and thank you for being one of the first to look out for them and possibly help you to be in a better position.

Now you may not be able to duplicate everything i’ve done or even have a need to, but every artists and label should have a blog where they can share what’s on their mind and promote their music from. With free services from Wordpress and Blogger, there is no reason why you should not have some type of outlet beyond a MySpace page.
